First let me state that in no way do I blame Steve Johns for TRYING to sell me a bike. I finally decided in June to purchase the F800S from Bogarts (Birmingham, AL). That was when I heard that BMW was factory-lowering the bikes (for only $175), as opposed to spending another $1000 for an aftermarket shock. I gave a deposit and watched as Steven entered the order into the system. I was told that I should be looking for my new bike in the fall.

In July, Steve checks on my order to see if it was in cue, and doesn't see it. He contacts the BMWNA Rep to see what the deal was and was told that they weren't going to lower the bikes until January. He (the Rep) had very little concern for my situation. Told Steve to tell me to just buy the shock. Very disappointing. BTW - No Notice of the schedule change.

So I wait patiently for my bike, thinking it'll be here this spring. I got a call from Steve today telling me that when he went to check on my bike, the order was gone. When he checked on it, he was told that they were not going to make the F800S anymore and that my order was canceled. BTW.... No Notice that my order was canceled.

I contacted the Customer Relations people at BMW, told them what you just read here. After being placed on hold for a moment, he comes back and tells me that they were still making the F800S.

WHAT THE PHUK?????

I'm livid... well, I was livid at 10am when I first got the call. Stay tuned, there may be more.....

http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/streetsurvival/dangerous_motorcycle_safety_myths/index.html

When science meets urban legend and imperfect logic, some of the "facts" motorcyclists think they "know" about motorcycle safety, crashes, and riding turn out to be dangerous myths and misconceptions. From the February 2006 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser magazine. By Art Friedman.

Get a group of motorcyclists talking about crashes and safety, and you will almost certainly hear some of them—popular misconceptions, incorrect assumptions, urban legends, and intuitive explanations about motorcycle safety that turn out to be wrong when you actually check out the facts. The problem is that believing these misconceptions can increase your chances of being involved in an accident or getting hurt when you do crash.

Maybe you know BS when you hear it, but maybe you have heard some myths repeated so often or by people whose expertise you respect that you think they are actually true. Unfortunately, there are a lot of motorcyclists who do believe them. We thought that some of these fallacies should be brought out into the light of day so that riders have the right information upon which to make informed riding-safety decisions. We also hope it will keep more motorcyclists from repeating such misconceptions to riders who turn to them for advice.

These are the Deadly Dozen, the motorcycle safety myths and urban legends ones that we hear most frequently.

Myth 1: Other Drivers Don't Care About Motorcyclists

It may seem hard to believe at times, but other drivers almost never actually want to hit you. Most of those near-misses come about because they don't always know you are there, even when you are right in front of them, seemingly in plain view. You can be obscured or completely hidden by glare, by other things on or along the road, by the cars roof pillars, the handicap hangtag, or by other traffic. Of course, not all drivers "think motorcycles" and make the effort to look that extra bit harder to see if there might be a motorcyclist hidden by that obscuration or in their blind spot.

Instead of assuming that they will ignore you even when they see you, you should help make it easier for drivers to spot you, especially as the population ages and more drivers have greater difficulty in picking you out. To overcome the fact that you might be hard to see and harder to notice, wear bright colors, especially on your helmet and jacket. Run your high beam during the day. Think about things that can hide you and your bike from other drivers, things that can be as common as the sun behind you, the car ahead in the next lane, or a couple of roadside poles that line up on the driver's line of sight toward you. Make an effort to ride in or move to a location where drivers with potentially conflicting courses can see you before they stray your way.

Myth 2: Loud Pipes Save Lives

Yeah, there are a few situations—like where you are right next to a driver with his window down who is about the to change lanes—where full-time noise-makers might help a driver notice you, but all that noise directed rearward doesn't do much in the most common and much more dangerous conflict where a car turns in front of you. Maybe it's the fatigue caused by the noise, maybe it's the attitudes of riders who insist on making annoying noise, or perhaps loud bikes annoy enough drivers to make them aggressive. Whatever the reason, the research shows that bikes with modified exhaust systems crash more frequently than those with stock pipes. If you really want to save lives, turn to a loud jacket or a bright helmet color, which have been proven to do the job. Or install a louder horn. Otherwise, just shut up.

Myth 3: Motorcycle Helmets Break Necks

It seems logical—you put more weight out there on the end of your neck and when you get thrown off the bike, that extra weight will create more pendulum force on your neck. Turns out, it doesn't work that way. In fact, the energy-absorbing qualities of a DOT motorcycle helmet also absorb the energy that breaks riders' necks in impacts. Studies show that helmeted motorcyclists actually suffer fewer neck injuries when they crash compared to riders who crash without helmets.

Myth 4: Helmets Block Your Ability to See or Hear Danger

The thing you learn when you dig into the research is that motorcycle riders who use helmets crash less frequently than those who don't. Maybe that happens because motorcyclists who decide to wear helmets have a better or more realistic attitude about riding. Maybe it's because putting on a helmet is a reminder that what you are about to do can be dangerous and the act of accepting protection puts you in the right mindset. Maybe it's because a helmet provides eye protection and cuts down wind noise so you can actually see and hear better. Maybe its because, by cutting wind pressure and noise, a helmet reduces fatigue. Whatever the reasons, wearing a helmet clearly does not increase a motorcyclist's risk of having an accident and wearing one correlates to reduced likelihood of an accident.

Myth 5: A Helmet Won't Help in Most Crashes

People look at the seemingly low impact speeds used in motorcycle-helmet testing and assume that if you are going faster than that, the helmet will no longer be up to the job. That ignores a few critical facts:

Most accidents happen at relatively low speeds.
Most of the impact energy is usually vertical—the distance your head falls until it hits.
Helmets (or at least helmets that meet DOT standards) perform spectacular life-saving feats at impact speeds far above those used in testing.
When a helmeted rider suffers a fatal head injury, it frequently doesn't matter, because, to hit hard enough to sustain that fatal injury, he sustained multiple additional fatal injuries to other parts of his body. In other words, the fact that the helmet didn't prevent the head injury was of no consequence.
The numbers clearly say that riders using DOT helmets simply survive crashes more successfully than those without them.

Myth 6: A Helmet Will Leave You Brain Damaged in an Crash When You Would Have Simply Died

Of course that's possible—your helmet attenuates the impact energy enough to keep the injury from being fatal but not enough to keep all of your eggs from getting scrambled. However, that's rare, and if you hit that hard, you are likely to get killed by some other injury. It's actually the un-helmeted rider who is likely to cross from animal to vegetable kingdom, and often from a relatively minor impact that would have damaged nothing but his ego if he'd been wearing a DOT helmet.

Myth 7: A Skilled Rider Should Be Able to Handle Almost Any Situation

The sharpest, most skilled motorcyclist in the world isn't going to be up to the task when a car turns or pulls out in front of him a short distance ahead and stops directly in his path broadside. Believing that your superior skills will keep you of trouble is a pipe dream, even if they are as good as you think. No matter how skilled you are, it's better to ride to avoid situations that can turn ugly. Slow down, scan farther ahead, and think strategically. And dress for the crash.

Myth 8: If You Are Going to Crash, Lay It Down

I suspect this line was developed by riders to explain why they ended up flat-side-down while trying to avoid a crash. They over-braked or otherwise lost control, then tried to explain the crash away as intentional and tried to make it sound like it wasn't a crash at all. Maybe motorcycle brakes once were so bad that you could stop better off your bike while sliding or tumbling. If so, that hasn't been true for decades. You can scrub off much more speed before and there be going slower at impact with effective braking than you will sliding down the road on your butt. And if you are still on the bike, you might get thrown over the car you collide with, avoiding an impact with your body. If you slide into a car while you are on the ground, you either have a hard stop against it or end up wedged under it. Remember that the phrase "I laid 'er down to avoid a crash" is an oxymoron, often repeated by some other kind of moron.

The only events where being on the ground might leave you better off are: 1) on an elevated roadway where going over the guardrail will cause you to fall a long way, or 2) in that situation you see occasionally in movies, where the motorcyclist slides under a semi trailer without touching it. That's a good trick if the truck is moving.

Myth 9: One Beer Won't Hurt

Maybe not while you are drinking it, but if you get on your motorcycle after that, the effects of a single beer can get you hurt for life. No matter how unaffected you are sure you are, all the studies say differently. You increase your risk to yourself and to others when you drink and hit the road. Also, as you age, your metabolism slows down, and those "coupla drinks" you had last night may still be affecting you when you hit the road the next morning.

Myth 10: It's Better to Stay in Your Lane than Split Lanes

In most parts of the world, motorcycles split lanes all the time, everywhere traffic is heavy. Here in the U.S., people often act as if lane-splitting is insane. But when someone actually studied it in the only place in the U.S. where it's legal (California), they discovered it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, slow-moving traffic. Still many motorcyclists berate others who do it, when they should in fact be endorsing it.

Myth 11: I'm Safer on the Street than on an Interstate

The thinking here must be that slower is safer, but that's only really true after the accident begins. Controlled-access roadways are inherently safer because all the traffic is going the same way, and there are no side streets from which someone can pop into your path, no pedestrians, and, often, less roadside "furniture" to hit if you depart the roadway. Running down the road at 70 mph side-by-sidewall with the whirling wheels of a semi may feel hairy, but you are actually safer than at half that speed on a city street or even a country road.

Myth 12: A Skilled Rider Can Stop Better with Conventional Brakes than with Anti-Lock Brakes

Extensive testing done recently disproves this popular notion. Even on clean, dry, flat pavement, skilled, experienced riders (who did hundreds of panic stops for the testing on outrigger-equipped motorcycles) stopped in less distance with anti-lock brakes (ABS) than with conventional or linked braking systems. Though the tests didn't include samples on surfaces with slick, dirty or wet spots, ABS certainly would have performed even better under those conditions while eliminating much of the risk of crashing.

The other cool thing about ABS on a motorcycle is that allows you to safely practice panic stops without risking a crash caused by lock-up.

Anyway, the next time tells you that he had to "lay it down" or that green bikes crash more than purple ones, you can nod and snicker internally or challenge them. Just don't base your own riding choices on what other people assume unless their is some solid science to back it up.
BMW will acquire the renowned motorcycle company Husqvarna Motorcycles. Dr. Herbert Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, and the Italian industrialist Claudio Castiglioni signed a contract on 19.07.2007 in Italy. The contractual agreement will come into full effect upon final approval of the EU cartel authorities. Both parties agreed that the purchase price was to remain confidential.

For BMW Motorrad the acquisition of Husqvarna Motorcycles is a logical step in enhancing the company's activities in the field of light, sporty motorcycles, which has recently been reinforced with the new models of the BMW G 650 X series. Commenting on BMW's decision to acquire Husqvarna Motorcycles, Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, stated: "With the Husqvarna models targeted at the sporty competition, we will be able to extend the BMW Motorrad range to include younger groups of customers as well as the entire off-road and supermoto sector much more quickly and effectively than with our core brand alone. This transaction also provides us with direct access to a worldwide sales network in the off-road segment."

BMW Motorrad plans to continue operating Husqvarna Motorcycles as a separate enterprise. All development, sales and production activities, as well as the current workforce, will remain in place at its present location in the region of Varese in northern Italy.

Just as BMW Motorrad, Husqvarna Motorcycles is steeped in tradition and one of the most renowned motorcycle companies in the world. Motorcycles were initially produced in Sweden from 1903 and in Italy from 1986. Today the company is one of the leading suppliers of sporty off-road motorcycles. In the course of its history, Husqvarna Motorcycles has achieved numerous international racing victories including European and World Championship titles.

You may have heard that Michelin has announced a recall on certain Pilot Power and Power 2CT front tires in 120/70-ZR17. The tires can be identified by the following Department of Transportation (DOT) tire identification numbers, which can be found on the sidewall of the tire:

DOT 6UCW 980T
DOT 6UCW 979T

Please note this recall affects only tires with these specific DOT codes, which are also clearly marked "Made in France." Similar tires manufactured in other countries, which will be marked with different DOT identification, are not affected by this recall.

If you have purchased or are currently using a tire affected by this recall, please schedule an appointment to have the tire replaced. We try and stock this tire but at times we do run out temporarily and need to order from our supplier. There of course is no cost to the consumers participating in this recall.

The road was a little slick and I dumped it. It wasn't bad though, hurt my toe, riped my jeans and only one of my co-workers saw it. Got a little flat spot on one of my cases though.
Remember winter riders to think about the ride you are about to take it will help keep the tires on the road and you off it.

This was posted by Darryl Cannon A.K.A. Killboy on the Deals Gap Yahoo discussion board, and also by TNHP officer Cagle on his myspace page. Always a little skeptical when I see posts that begin with "A trooper said...." but he was googled and he's the real McCoy. Another interesting thing that I found on a Deal's Gap news site is that the troopers are riding BMW 1150RT/Ps....
~~~~~~~
"EVERYONE WHO GOES TO DEALS GAP------PLEASE READ THIS-----I'M TRYING TO
HELP YOU ALL OUT"...posted by a State Trooper:
"Hey, just to give you a heads up for next season----we have a new captain in the knoxville district which covers blount county------ he has already told us that we will put a stop to the "race track driving" up on the dragon this year------so far what they have said is that the speed limit is 30mph and "ANYONE" caught going 50mph and up will be charged with reckless driving and will be jailed and their bike/car will be impounded--- --I am telling you
this because i am trying to put the word out to everyone i know----or to people who know people that go up there-----I don't want to have to take people to jail for this---however I have bills to pay and I kind of like having a job---so never the less I have to do what i am told to do-----so the way i see it is that if killboy.com knows and you know and dealsgap.com knows and whoever else can find out can pass this along---it will benefit everybody--- -----feel free to copy and pass this to let everyone know-------if you get caught up there it is only your fault because i am trying to pass the word along for everybody's sake-----we are
not just going to come up from the bottom like in years past---they are gonna have us go through cherohala skwy in north carolina and come from the top down to the bottom----so no more free rides on your way back to the state line----they are gonna bring unmarked cars with radio's and have unmarked bikes up there----this will be a joint effort with blount county and the THP-----The entire THP motor unit will be brought in 2 people at a time(for a week long assignment) to be paired up with the local car----they plan on busting tail at least 3-4 times right off the bat---then they will sit back and see what takes place-----these orders came from Nashville Headquarters- --we have a complete brand new higher ranking structure from the very tip top spot down----they have said we will work until the problem is solved----just wanted to give you and your friends a heads up.......... SIGNED...
.......Trp Cagle with THP assigned to Blount County Division---- (don't come crying to me if you get busted----cause I'm telling you now)"
As a side note, for those who haven't ridden the Dragon (www.tailofthedragon.com) use more caution on the Dragon and Deal's Gap, because of the faster bikes, (i.e. crotch rockets) and the unexpected trucks that use that Intrastate highway 129.. A good time to ride the Dragon is on Monday and Tuesday around 7 to 11 AM... the earlier the better.... Ride safe, hey average 30 MPH on that 11 miles...and you done something!!!
I was in today ordering a couple small parts for my '85 K100 and decided to take the opportunity for a little biker to biker therapy. I'm still new at riding after a 25 year absence so my question had to do with riding in severely gusting winds as we had here Saturday. I realize that sort of weather is always going to suck for riding but it seemed like I had a particularly bad time of it compared to my riding partners who were primarily on low slung cruisers. So my question was whether it was rediculous to put a 300+ pound monkey such as myself on a relatively light, tall and top heavy bike like the K100? My shop's response was to go into different styles of riding, how much better my bike cornered, etc. Yeah, I know all that, but I was seriously scared at how I was pushed all around by the wind. Seems to me if I sat lower on a heavier bike to begin with, things might have gone at least somewhat better.... yes? no?
*I should add that I ride naked... that is to say without a faring which I'm sure doesn't help with the whole wind thing as well.
Right now it has a tinted aftermarket windshield by Spitfire that my dad put on the bike when he was riding it. I want to take that ugly-ass thing off, but I ride the bike every day and the shield is practical.
Original or aftermarket is fine. I've already checked out Parabellum as I have purchased their products in the past. $500 is a bit more than I wanted to pay though.
Something like an R90S fairing would be perfect. I can make modified brackets to install it and relocate turn indicators if necessary as well.
If anyone has recieved one of these...they are well aware that the picture they send you of your license plate is kinda blurred and out of focus. Well...as I can make out for the most...it looks like the numbers registered to me...but its not my bike! Not even a friends bike. I dont have signal lights and or bags. And my rear fender is chrome. The bike in the picture looks like a sportster black fender with hard bags. Kinda weird. I tried contacting fastrak and still have had no response. Does any know how to go about really contesting this and having it be a winning situation? The money isnt much...but my main concern...is that someone may be out there with the same plate! What are the chances? And how do I find out for sure to clear this matter up?
...This journey began a long time ago, but Ill just scoot back a day and begin yesterday, the morning of August eighteenth two thousand five.
Our trip started out in Oakland California. We peeled out of our warm comfort zones and jumped onto the 580 around 6:30 am. Heading out on a cross-country trip, first stop, Las Vegas. On the way to getting to know one another’s riding styles, Scott and I hustled through some morning commuters. We had to dodge the sun coming up in our eyes while maneuvering through traffic. Pretty thing was that the moon was hanging out too. It was nearly full peeking out from behind the familiar bay area fog.
Scott called Oliver and Nick around 9:30am. Oliver was still in bed. Scott told him our location and said we'd call him when we got further down the road. Oliver and Nick were riding out from Los Angeles. We arrived shy of five minutes of each other in Barstow California. Ate some meat at a truck stop, bullshitted about tattooing, the trip, people and life. Anyhow, we fueled up and made a mad dash onto the road as a party of four. Funny how riding out on the open road with people you don’t know, lets you in on who a person is without any conversation. Personalities reflect heavily in riding style, curtiousities, mannerisms and basic ability in working with others. One of the boys had just started riding this year. I was impressed with his awareness and natural skill in anchoring the pack. I honestly thought I was coming out on a ride with some green bucks and am surprised to find they have some riding savvy. So far so good.
It took us ten hours of riding to reach Vegas. We stayed the night at a friend of Olivers. I am grateful to Travis for the hot shower and place to rest. Started out of Vegas around 6:30 am. Hit our first rain heading to Hoover dam. Then bombed through the desert to have some biscuits and gravy at a cafe in Kingman. Had to stop at a Harley shop to get some parts for Scotts bike. While waiting and going over my bike I noticed the drain plug to my drive shaft was leaking all over my back rim. I checked its level, topped off and tightened down the bolt. So far I’ve only lost one bolt out of my rear fender. My bike is running so well. We then got onto I-40 heading east. What a pretty ride that is out of California. Made me consider moving off the coastline for a minute. Got attacked by a solo cloud that decided to dump a bunch of hail on us and boy did that hurt. Felt like someone was biting pieces out of my chest. I was so glad I had my helmet on. I was the only one. The boys got pummeled.
We pulled off along the way for some candid rock posing pictures and then pushed into the park just before sunset. We ended the second day here at Mather Camp ground on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The rain has stopped finally and so have the thunder bellows. Now the crickets are chirping to the brightest full moon I have ever seen in a lifetime. Scott broke down once we paid our entrance. Thought it was the altitude giving his bike hell. But after some playing around, noticed his headlight kept coming in and out when he would rev his motor. Worked his way through the harness and voila, found a wire that had rubbed loose from his battery. We got to our campsite in a down pour. Got some wood...some how the boys managed to start a fire. We ate some grub...and then took a quick trip to see the Canyon before the sun was completely gone. It was the first time for the boys to see the canyon. I felt bad because it was cloudy and over cast. Not the usual vision of splendor. Beautiful though. Came back to the campsite and our little fire was still alive. So we stoked it and ate some s’mores, talked some more shit, and watched the moon come up with a spectacular appearance. Oh yeah, we saw some elk too. One that was as big as a Clydesdale. Honestly the rack on this animal was as wide as a car. We watched him scratch his horns on a young tree and uproot it like it was a weed. Some tourist told us it was a moose. Ha, ya have to laugh at his mistake, because...this creature was big. But it was not a moose. I’m the last to hit the hay. I can hear the boys snoring away now. They are three deep in that tent with all their gear. What did Oliver say earlier? He called it a, "a three friend tent". Three guys, six helmets. I like my little spot here. Missing my guy. But oh boy...hell be home soon and what a tale I will have to share with him. The fire is finally out and its time to get some shut eye. Waking up tomorrow at 5am. It’s about 10:pm now. Need to rest my bones.
Days later.
...We got up and out of the Grand Canyon days ago. Seems like weeks. Woke a bunch of folks up trying to get out of there. Boys got to see the Canyon while it was clear. It was full of long morning shadows but much more visible than the night before. I got some pictures of Oliver and Nick standing out on a rock the size of a couch. Too scary for me. Couldn’t even manage to talk myself out there by taunting myself about the young asian girl out there with her family. They were just chilling out on the rim without any fear. No thanks. Couldn’t do it.
So, that was a quick stop. We then headed back towards the I-40. Took a side road to Flagstaff. I believe it was the 180. Pretty ride. Nice to get off the highway. Rode by the "home of the white buffalo". Got into Flagstaff and got some breakfast before getting back on the I-40. We rode all day. Passed through the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, saw all the dinosaurs, and even the Cadillac display. We figured we wanted to get as close to the border of Texas as possible and made it to Tucumcari just after dark. We found the KOA we were looking for and pitched our tents. The KOA had showers and a video arcade. So I freshened up while the boys played some racing game. I found a cute little toad and brought it in for the boys to see. They freaked me out about getting warts from it. I had never had worries like that as a kid. But just in case I did wash my hands again. Once I got to my tent I fell asleep fast and woke up to a morning rain shower. Bye the time we all got up. The sky had cleared for the most part. I felt rested. Ready for the ride into Dallas.
I was so thankful for the cloud coverage we had. It saved us from the heat. We hit some more down pours and ended up rolling into Olivers place around 10:pm. We cleaned up, jumped back on our bikes and rode down town to a mexican restaurant for some dinner. We dropped into the bar next door to the restaurant to watch a country band. We rode over to Elm St. Tattoo, Olivers shop. An artist named Bobby Love did a wonderful job of decorating the outside of the place. After a good nights sleep at Olivers house we headed over to Jeff Milburns shop called Automotive Fabrication to work on Scotts bike. Jeff is a really cool man. Lives by doing what he loves to do. And is apparently top notch with anything to do with motors or modifying. Found out he had survived a spinal cord injury. I thought having broken my back in a motorcycle was frightening. I was stoked to meet this man. He has a great life story and is still going strong with a smile. He helped Scott rejet, and change the breather value on his carburetor, put in some champion spark plugs and tuned the bike to near perfection. We went to lunch at a place called Poor Boys and ate sandwiches. I opted to not have the special sauce. We then said our goodbyes...and headed back to Olivers to wait for another friend of Olivers named Smoock to come over to help me with my bike. He showed me how to adjust the valves on my bike. And some tricks on how to do it properly. We changed the spark plugs and found out the source of a bad rattle. It was my tool bag...hitting my front fender...Had to find another place for it. Silly, huh? We then loaded up into Olivers car. On our way to pick up Slim another friend of Olivers. Oliver decided to pull of the road and do a bunch of donuts in a grassy field. It was a little surreal with Elton John playing on the stereo. After picking up Slim we raced out to Olivers Moms to celebrate her birthday. After enjoying a barbeque, looking at old pictures of Oliver and enjoying some family time we decided to catch a movie. On our way to the movie theater Oliver missed an exit...and decided to cross a median while doing 60 miles an hour to make up for his mistake. We were five deep in the car...he pulled it off. The guys were apparently used to Olivers antics. I wasn’t so stoked. I’ve sat with Evel Kenievel and he never risked my life. Anyway...we got to the movie and watched 40 yr. Old Virgin. I didn’t like the ending. I was happy to get to talk to Slim though. He was very pleasant, had depth and had many interesting things to talk about. We got back to Olivers eventually. Did some laundry, packed up and got another good nights rest. The next morning another rider joined our group named Tony. We met up, fueled and headed north to Oklahoma. Oliver wanted to go see his pops. So we rode through the Ouachita mountain range up the 75 out of Dallas then to the 70. On to the 271, then the 59 and some other hwy...to somewhere outside of Liberty Oklahoma. That was a fun ride. It started out hot as hell leaving Dallas. But started to cool off once in the mountains. The road was full of long sloped turns. Once we got to Olivers Pops house we motivated to get some dinner. They lead us to a place called home cooking or something like that. It was awesome. They had the best chicken fried steak and had this breaded deep-fried corn on the cob, good enough to die for. So yummy. After dinner we said our good byes to Olivers family and got back onto I-40 heading towards Little Rock. We stayed with another friend on Olivers. A gentle man named Rob. He owns 7th st. Tattoo. He was really cool. Opened his house to the five of us and rode out with us the next morning to have some breakfast. I got to sit with him for a little while, while waiting for the guys as they shopped for stuff in Wal-Mart. He told me he had been a successful graphic artist and had gotten into tattooing late in life. Said he had had trouble from alot of folks because of his age. Said that Oliver was one of the only people to offer him support. He also mentioned that Kari...my mentor and friend had been kind to him and willing to share info without ego. I agreed with him about how the scene can be hard to crack. But admired that he didn’t give up and now has a successful shop and loves the life he has chosen. Many blessings to him. His son in law...Jeb came to breakfast with us and took over Robs bike to ride us into Memphis. Rob had to be responsible and go take care of his shop. So we fueled up again and headed into Memphis...with a Sun Records tour as a plan. All I have to say about that place...is, "too much Elvis and not enough Cash!" I enjoyed the effort of the up beat tour guide. He was funny. Im sure we were something of a cool drink on a hot day for him. We rode over to Beale St. and then found a Restaurant Olivers pops had recommended. It is called the Rendezvous. They specialize in ribs. They were delicious. After grubbing out, we made our way through some traffic with "outside of Nashville", as our destination. We had picked a campsite in Murfreesboro. We got there well after dark. The road leading into the place seemed long and unnerving. Especially when it became a one-lane road without any signs for a good chunk of road. I could hear the theme music for Deliverance playing in my head as we rode into this forest. We finally found the campsite. The gate was closed but Nick rolled up to it and opened it. We eventually rode in. Taking the option to pay when we could. We found a site and read a sign that stated we could only pitch our tents on the gravel. Thanks to inflatable mattresses! I took a quick walk to a couple of other sites to check out what they offered. And decided the one we chose was just as suitable. I came back to my gear and started to set up my tent. Oliver had gone on up the same path and yelled out," come quick, check this out!" We all ran up to where he was and right there where I had just walked through was the gnarliest, biggest spider hanging from the forest canopy above us. I freaked out. Set my tent up and zipped it up with out saying goodnight. I killed whatever mosquitoes had gotten into my tent and lay there in the muggy heat fully dressed with my boots on. I was too scared to take them off. Not so into creepy crawlies! I finally couldn’t take it any longer and stripped down. The humidity was almost unbearable. Sometime in the early morning it cooled off a bit. My bag, my clothes, smelled so funky. It took two days to dry my bag out from my sweat. From Murfreesboro we rode out to meet up with Nicks best friend Cody. He had left Jacksonville that night to meet up with us outside of Atlanta. We finally found him outside of Macon. We picked up and continued on to Jacksonville. We tried to reach Savannah before dark. But pulled off early and ended up at a random RV spot. The man running the place came out and told us we couldn’t camp where we had stopped.... and would offer us another spot. He got in his car and led us to what looked like a hay keeper that had been converted to a stage. The grass was well kept and mowed. He turned on the lights and showed us where the outhouses were. He let us have the run of the place. I set my tent up...and plugged my phone into a hanging outlet. There was a cotton field behind the stage. A little lake, some old buggies and farm stuff. It was really cool. We laid out some stuff he had let us buy in his store...and had a late evening picnic before going to sleep. I fell asleep before the boys did. I was tired. The next morning we started out into a crazy lightening, thunder and rain storm. It pretty much poured on us all the way to Mike Wilsons door. Soaked to the bone we had made it to the east coast. I was so stoked to do some laundry...take a shower...and chill out with Mikes dogs. He has five of them. While I was in the shower the boys took off to get something to eat. I had to do laundry. Had some girl issues. I was hungry too. Fortunately I had some granola bars and a couple of candy bars to tide me over till the guys got back. Mike, Oliver and Scott came back to get me and we then went to the shop Mike works at to say hi to the folks there. We pulled up at Inksmith and Rogers on Atlantic. Eric was sitting on the couch when came in. I walked through the shop and checked out their lay out. I had heard about this shop or one of them since I first began tattooing. Troy Lane who worked for this shop had come through the shop I was apprenticing at in Portland back in 88. Kinda cool to put some history to present reality. I got to meet Eric and a few of the boys there. I need to get one of them a signed piece of artwork from one of the guys I work with. Got to remember that. Mike then scooped us up and drove us over to meet his friend Bubba. Bubba has been building bikes for over thirty years and owns a bike shop called Cycle Accessories, to show off his latest endeavor. It is a custom bike with a 2000, 100th anniversary limited edition motor in it. Mike has done a beautiful job on all of it. The oil tank he made out of some old aluminum pans...he hand stitched and leather worked the seat...the detail in the paint job...all of it. She’s a beauty. It was Bubbas birthday. So he invited us over to celebrate with his family at his home. The house was full. Had some brownies...played with some kids, watched the doings of others, and then
