BMW’s Boxer: A Classic Design Is Updated and Refined

Article
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/automobiles/05BOXER.html?_r=1&ref=automobiles

Slideshow
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/07/05/automobiles/0705-bmw_index.html

GRACEFUL proportions and well-rounded performance may be enough to clinch a sale for many vehicles, but for some enthusiasts those qualities will never be enough.

It takes attractions of a more mechanical nature — the catlike reflexes of a rear-engine Porsche, the distinctive howl of a Ferrari V-12 or the turbine smoothness of a Mazda rotary — to persuade these shoppers to open wallets.

Such is the case with buyers of BMW motorcycles powered by the flat-twin “boxer” engine design that has been a brand attribute since the 1920s. The horizontal cylinders make for an appealingly logical layout — placed 180 degrees to each another, they jut out into the cooling air flow on either side of the bike — that exerts an enduring hold on owners.

When combined with shaft drive — another longtime feature of BMW two-wheelers, considered a less messy, lower maintenance alternative to chain drives — the result is a machine of distinctive look and feel. BMW boxer loyalists are quick to list the benefits of the protruding cylinders that define the motorcycles, including smooth operation, a low center of gravity and ease of access for maintenance.

A body of devoted owners, however, does not outweigh BMW’s need to comply with modern realities like noise and emissions regulations. The presence of boxer twins in BMW’s current line of touring, sport and dual-purpose bikes speaks volumes about the company’s continuing development of the design over eight decades.

The persistent allure of a machine’s architecture is well known to Rhyder McClure, an author of computer books and owner of the New York NannyCam Company, who has been riding BMW boxers since the 1960s. Two bikes he owns span a half-century of BMW boxer history: a 1959 R50, which has a 500 cc pushrod engine with two valves per cylinder, and a 2009 HP2 Sport with a modern four-valve 1200 cc engine.

What a contrast it is to climb aboard these two Beemers and think about the technological distance separating them.

The HP2 Sport is the hottest boxer BMW has ever built. Its engine is rated at 130 horsepower, and puts its power to the road by way of a sophisticated suspension system and outstanding antilock brakes. The latest entry in a special high-performance line, the HP2 Sport’s vocabulary runs through all the buzzwords, from fuel injection to digital dashboard to carbon fiber body panels.

Riding the 50-year-old R50, on the other hand, involves traveling back in time to the pre-electronic era of motorcycling. Its engine produces a modest 26 horsepower, and the 4-speed transmission emits crunching sounds while taking its own sweet time accomplishing gear changes. The best shifting strategy is to pull in the clutch and roll off the throttle for a second or two, allowing time for the heavy flywheel to give up some of its momentum, then thunking into the next gear.

Pulling away from a stoplight can hardly be described as accelerating; the old machine gathers speed at about the same pace a savings account builds principal these days. Slowing down on the R50 is another interesting experience. Its simple drum brakes need a good pull on the brake lever to get any response at all. This performance was normal 50 years ago. Riders planned ahead — way ahead — for stops, and downshifted often to add the engine’s compression braking to the modest friction generated by the brakes.

Mr. McClure found the bike languishing in a Pennsylvania barn in 1992 and has since restored it to a high standard. The stately Art Nouveau-inspired styling of the cream-colored R50 is like nothing else. The riding experience is distinctive, too. Twisting open the throttle makes the rear end rise somewhat and the bike twitches to the right slightly on downshifts. From the comfort of its solo seat, the muted exhaust note induces a sense of calm. What a relaxing way to follow a two-lane country road.

The 2009 HP2 Sport may embody a world of technological change, yet it still imparts a feeling of continuity. Looking down, the rider still sees the familiar cylinders protruding into the wind, and there is still a driveshaft transmitting power to the rear wheel.

Manufacturers take a great risk when they decide to retire signature mechanical architectures and move on to new designs: their customers may not follow. This happened in 1984, when BMW made plans to power all its future motorcycles with liquid-cooled in-line 3- and 4-cylinder engines — and had the temerity to issue a Final Edition boxer model. But the outcry from loyal boxer customers was overwhelming and BMW had to reverse course.

Thus began the series of modernized boxer engines of which the HP2’s is the highest expression. When BMW granted the boxers a stay of execution, the company knew that an electromechanical evolution would be needed to keep up with the abundant competition.

First the engine got a complete redesign. Longtime owners of the classic air-cooled boxers, who call their bikes airheads, looked askance at the new oil-cooled, or oilhead, engines with their computer-controlled fuel injection systems. They wondered how they would fix mechanical problems by themselves.

When motorcycles used carburetors and breaker-point ignition systems, as the R50 does, riders learned how to adjust the point gap or clean dirt from the carburetor’s float bowls. Only simple tools were needed; owners developed a sense of pride in learning to make roadside fixes for common problems.

Owners of today’s machines have far less chance of making a quick repair if the spark or fuel ceases to arrive in the cylinders. It is either trust the electronics, or stick with older BMWs.

Mr. McClure, despite his expertise in software, was one of those self-reliant types — until the sight of the HP2 Sport made him to throw caution to the wind. He felt the wallet vibrating in his pocket like a cellphone. Some $27,000 later, an HP2 was parked in his garage.

“I’m an electronic guy now, which I never thought would happen,” he said. “I just ride the thing, and marvel at what it can do.”

The HP2’s rush of acceleration and the capability of its chassis put the bike in competition with high-priced twins from European makers like Ducati, KTM and Moto Guzzi. There’s a quietly nasty pop-pop coming from the underseat muffler when coasting with the throttle shut. What rivets the rider’s attention is the excellent high-speed stability and agility of this überboxer, the utterly contemporary feel despite its seemingly dated architecture. It has come a very long way.

Motorcycle makers are not alone in being vulnerable to customer wrath when they fiddle with heritage. Porsche encountered the same resistance when it made moves to phase out the flat-6 of the 911 in favor of new models with liquid-cooled engines, and had to continue developing the design. The loyalty to a layout can be strong enough to make a dedicated pliers-and-screwdriver guy overlook the microchips.

Options for Saddle Bags for '78 BMW R100/7

I'm looking to put a set of saddle bags (locking hard cases, really) on my 1978 BMW R100/7 but I am not really interested in Krauser or Hepco & Becker suitcase style bags. They are expensive and I prefer a top loading bag. Does anyone know if other hard cases fit these bikes? All searches and websites only return these suitcase bags as options for BMW's.

Keep the wheels on the pavement (unless you meant to do that)!
Noisy cycle law put in reverse

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/bronx/2009/01/07/2009-01-07_noisy_cycle_law_put_in_reverse.html

A proposed city law that could let cops confiscate noisy motorcycles has been sent back to the legal shop for retooling.

The confiscation provision in a City Council bill drew a backlash of protest e-mails from motorcyclists and biker advocacy groups to the City Council members sponsoring it.

After the Daily News published an article on the bill last month, scores of bikers complained they were being singled out for harsh punishment. Why should motorcycles be seized for making noise, while cars and trucks are not, they asked.

The bikers picked up a potent ally in Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-Queens), the deputy majority leader, who pushed for changes in the legislation.

He said that most motorcyclists are law-abiding and shouldn't be penalized for the too-noisy few.

Comrie and Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens), whose Public Safety Committee has jurisdiction over the bill, said Tuesday that Council lawyers and staffers have conferred on the bill with motorcycle activists.

The bike confiscation provision is likely to be changed to make it applicable only after a third violation, rather than after a second, as in the original bill, said Vallone.

A vote had been expected this week, but it has now put off until a final version of the bill is produced and another public hearing is held, according to Vallone.

Backers of the original bill said many New Yorkers are fed up with improperly muffled motorcycles that disregard the 80-decibel limit in the city's noise code.

They said current enforcement methods haven't worked because they require cops to be present to hear the noise or to monitor it with noise meters.

Also, police officials testified that chasing noisy motorcycles poses public safety problems.

The bill would have allowed cops to ticket a stopped or parked motorcycle if it didn't bear a tag stating it meets noise-control standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Motorcycles made after 1986 are required to bear the appropriate EPA tags at time of sale, and replacements parts are also required to have the right EPA tags.

Bikers contend that not all manufacturers use the EPA tags.

They also assert that loud pipes help save lives - theirs and those of other motorists and pedestrians

AFTER Gerard Boisman had his 1992 BMW R100 GS motorcycle serviced at Bob’s BMW in Jessup, Md., he rode home only to watch in dismay as his newly changed oil pooled on his driveway. He called Bob’s, fully expecting to be told to truck the bike back to Jessup — a $250 expense to redo an $80 oil change.
Instead, the Bob’s mechanic who had changed his oil made the hourlong drive to Mr. Boisman’s house in Stevensville, Md., apologized profusely and fixed the oil filter. Then, for good measure, he synchronized the carburetors and cleaned the oil from the bike.

“He even wiped the driveway clean,” Mr. Boisman said.

To top it off, Bob’s sent Mr. Boisman a T-shirt for his trouble. “It definitely makes me a loyal customer,” he said.

It’s not that Mr. Boisman is a hot prospect. That’s just the way Bob Henig — the Bob in Bob’s BMW — operates.

“You can’t pay for the advertising that is as good as doing it right,” Mr. Henig said.

In the not-so-distant past, that devotion to service, coupled with Mr. Henig’s voluble, sometimes volatile personality, might have resulted in a nice regional following for a flourishing dealership. Now, thanks to the Internet, a powerful reputation — good or bad — travels farther, faster.

Over nearly 20 years, with minimal advertising, Mr. Henig has become the largest BMW motorcycle parts dealer in the United States, as well as a leading dealership. Bob’s BMW is known among BMW riders the world over.

“I can be riding in the Alps, and someone on a BMW will come over to talk to me, and Bob’s name will come up,” said Fred Rau, a motorcycle journalist.

Mr. Henig has established Bob’s BMW as a brand with the kind of power some companies take generations to accrue. That is especially remarkable because a BMW dealership is a franchise business. With the same tools and opportunities as other shops, Mr. Henig’s dealership has become one of the few to gain international fame within the BMW community.

Mr. Henig did not set out to build a leading motorcycle shop, but he had always been a natural entrepreneur, he says. His succession of businesses — from a lawn service in high school to home improvement, and jobs as a freelance photographer, photo shop manager and industrial salesman — were linked in one way, he said: “I did a quality job.”

Meanwhile, he was becoming an ever more avid motorcyclist and even dabbled in a motorcycle-customizing business. His career choice was cemented in 1980 when Mr. Henig crashed his motorbike into a Buick driven by an 89-year-old man who ran a stop sign.

Besides putting Mr. Henig in a neck and back brace, the crash led him to marry his girlfriend, Suzanne, an administrative whiz who became his business partner. Doctors told him not to do jobs that involved climbing ladders or lugging camera equipment.

That winter he started Bob’s Used Parts. “There was no business plan,” he said. “It was, Let’s see where this goes.”

Mr. Henig quickly noticed a demand for small parts that most shops didn’t want to stock. But where other dealers saw bother, Mr. Henig saw opportunity.

“The shops didn’t see a profit selling a $3 part, which is true,” he said. “But when people need that $3 part, they usually buy something else.”

It was Business 101 — find a need and fill it. And Mr. Henig applied lessons learned from his other businesses. Be organized, and even $3 parts are profitable. “If you spend a half-hour looking for a $3 part, you’ve lost money,” he said. Focus on service, and sales will follow. “My prices weren’t cheaper,” he said. “My service was better.”

Bob’s BMW began to gain a reputation.

“He became legendary as the go-to guy if you needed a hard-to-find part,” Mr. Rau, the writer, said.

That legend was built online, with forum posts sending business his way by word of mouth.

Mr. Henig said he kept paid advertising to a minimum, raising his profile by appearing yearly at as many as 20 BMW rallies around the country, a strategy he still pursues but to a lesser degree, and doing charity work.

“When you’re at these rallies and there are thousands and thousands of people, you could call Bob a kind of a celebrity,” said Vince Winkel, editor of BMW Owners News magazine. “He takes time to talk to everyone, no matter who it is.”

The parts business outgrew the basement of his Cape Cod house in Wheaton, Md., then the addition of his parents’ garage, then a self-storage facility. By 1985, he was buying $100,000 to $120,000 in parts a year.

BMW soon noticed that his business was the largest parts customer in the United States, Mr. Henig said, but the company would sell parts only to a dealer. So, seeking the dealer discount and control over his inventory, he reluctantly joined the German company’s network in 1991.

They clashed from the outset. “He can be cantankerous,” said Laurence Kuykendall, a spokesman for BMW motorcycles. “Opinionated with a capital O is his middle name, but he always puts the customer first. If a customer has a problem, he will turn over every stone to find a solution for that customer, especially if he thinks someone else is to blame.”

In the used-parts business, Mr. Henig had faced limited competition. But as a dealer, he was up against two other BMW stores within driving distance. And unlike Bob’s, they offered discounted bikes. “One had taken out ads that said, ‘We will beat any price Bob puts on a bike,’ ” Mr. Henig said.

Bob’s salesmen nearly mutinied, wanting to match the discounts. But that would have cut into the profits that supported the high level of service, and Mr. Henig was not swayed.

“All we have to do is roll out the red carpet so thick that they don’t go back to the other dealer,” Mr. Henig told his staff. Prospects were told that the higher price would buy them extra services, like priority for repairs and use of a loaner bike. He sold 54 bikes in his first year, nearly double the sales goal set by BMW. In 2007 he sold 400 new and used bikes, he said.

Bob’s is more than just a shop to riders, many of whom congregate at a picnic table near the shop entrance to swap stories. Plans are under way to increase his store’s size by 50 percent, perhaps as soon as next spring. A new building would allow him to expand the in-house museum’s 40-bike display and offer a coffee shop that would be a sort of clubhouse and after-hours meeting place.

For all of his hail-fellow-well-met manner, Mr. Henig is also a formidable negotiator, which has made him a polarizing figure. While his service has attracted some customers, his pricing has alienated others. He can also be sensitive to a perceived slight, said Ron Orem, a longtime customer and friend.

“If Bob has a shadow, it’s he thinks if you shop somewhere else you are disloyal,” Mr. Orem said. Occasionally, that leads to suggestions that customers take their business elsewhere.

If he has infuriated a few customers, it hasn’t hurt the brand. One measure of the prestige of Bob’s brand is the demand for Bob’s BMW key rings, $2 plastic trinkets given only to people who have purchased a bike at Bob’s. “Staff have been offered $100 for them,” Mr. Henig says.

Part of the reason may be the perk that comes with them — a direct line to Mr. Henig. “Attached to that key fob,” he said, “is an offer to stop by my office any time.”

Study shows antilocks good for motorcycles too Option is not widely available; reduces fatal crashes by 38 percent

URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27313063/

The Associated Press
updated 10:35 a.m. ET, Wed., Oct. 22, 2008

WASHINGTON - Antilock brakes could help motorcycle riders avoid fatal crashes, according to a study by the insurance industry.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Wednesday that the fatal crash rate involving motorcycles equipped with optional antilock brakes, or ABS, was 38 percent lower than the rate involving similar motorcycles without the systems.

Antilock brakes, like their counterparts on cars and trucks, help motorcycle riders stop their bikes abruptly without locking up the wheels or fishtailing. The system evaluates the brake pressure multiple times per second, allowing motorcycle riders to fully brake both wheels in an emergency situation and avoid hitting the pavement.

Antilocks are more typically found on touring bikes and have been available on a limited number of motorcycles since BMW AG introduced ABS on the K100 in 1988.

“Even though adding antilocks won’t make motorcycling as safe as going by car, it’s something manufacturers can do to reduce the risk of traveling on two wheels instead of four,” said Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Rob Dingman, president and CEO of the American Motorcyclist Association, said the study shows the potential of antilock brakes, but it also underscores the need for a “long-overdue” federal study of the causes of motorcycle crashes.

“Our members would welcome an ABS option on more models, but there must be a broader strategy to reduce motorcycle accidents and fatalities that includes increased education and motorist awareness,” Dingman said.

Safety officials have been concerned about a steady rise in motorcycle deaths. More than 5,100 motorcyclists died in 2007, compared with 2,294 fatalities in 1998. The deaths have climbed as vehicle miles traveled have grown by more than 20 percent during the period and motorcycle registrations have surpassed 6 million, compared with 3.8 million in 1998.

In the report, researchers studied eight motorcycles that offer antilock brakes as an option. They found there were 6.6 fatal crashes per 10,000 registered motorcycles without antilocks in 2005-2006. The rate for the same bikes equipped with antilocks was 4.1, or 38 percent lower, during the same period.

In a second study, the IIHS found that antilock brakes appeared to reduce collision claims — insurance losses were 21 percent lower for motorcycles with antilock brakes compared with similar motorcycles without the equipment. The findings were based on a data set of 72,000 insured years of 2003-2007 model year Honda, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha bikes.

IIHS said antilocks were standard or optional equipment on about 40 motorcycles from the 2008 model year; top manufacturers include BMW, Harley-Davidson Inc., and Honda Motor Co.

ABS typically adds about $1,000 or more to the cost of a motorcycle.

Ty van Hooydonk, the Motorcycle Industry Council’s director of product communications, said ABS can be effective for some riders but it depends on factors such as road conditions, skill level and the type of riding involved.

“For a number of experienced enthusiasts out there, they’re able to stop with a non-ABS motorcycle quicker than they are with an ABS-equipped motorcycle,” van Hooydonk said. “It’s all very situational.”

Ray Zimmerman, executive director of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, said ABS could be very valuable when trying to bring a bike to a stop on slick and icy roads.

Zimmerman, of Ellisville, Mo., said he has been riding motorcycles for more than four decades and logged nearly 250,000 miles on BMW motorcycles. His ABS system has come in handy on two occasions, and he’s glad he had it.

“You keep a bike from swerving out of control one time, and it’s worth (it),” he said.

Flashing LED taillight for GS

Has anyone put the LED taillight on their BMWs?

What did you think of them?

I'd like to add more lights to my bike, but I think the BMW electrical system is pretty specific on what you do to it. Unlike my old Honda that I would just splice 12V stuff is all the time. I like the look and the brake flash that gets other motorist eye when braking.

Cheers

Airhead Carb Synch?

Hello Airheads! I have a 1971 R60/5 which i love but am having a problem with acceleration stumbling at about 35 to 37RPM. I've completed all timing and valve adjustments, removed and cleaned both carbs ( which helped a bit with acceleration) but I'm having a time with syncing the carbs to each other. I thought I remember reading a post somewhere about a tubelike tool you can buy or make to get the precise air and fuel mixture ratio but can't recall where I saw it. Does anyone Know? Or have better knowledge of how to do this?

hello again airheads! thanks for the carb input from my previous post. My 71' beemer's running great! My new problem is that she feels a little jumpy in the front end., like a car would if the struts were going bad. Just wondering if adding oil to them might help or hurt the situation? I went down last year after hitting a deer and wonder if some of that oil might have escaped while on it's side? Or would it be best to do an overhaul on them with the install of new bushings, and what's a good way to attack such an overhaul? Ride on -Ride safe-Just ride. thanx!

R60/5 Lost Muffler at speed

I lost my muffler at speed this morning and it was re-attached after a couple miles to the nearest service station but now the engine runs very rough or will not start at all. It was running perfectly prior to the incident. Now the mechanic is telling me that he can see a detached "ring" beneath the spark plug if he flashes a light into the hole. I am new to these bikes. The side where the ring is loose is also the side where the muffler came off. Any ideas og how serious this might be or why a lost muffler would cause this? Compression?

Thanks in advance.

Hey All!

Returning tribe member here and just throwing out an intro. Been riding all my life since age 5. I've ridden all different marquees, but keep coming back to BMW's. My current ride, which I've posted up a picture of, was sold out of my parents motorcycle shop brand new when I was 8 yrs old and I actually did the detailing on it. Three owners later and it has come back full circle to me.

Anyways, if there are any airhead riders out there in the Portland, OR area hit me up for a ride sometime!

I have a '75 R75 /6 and I am sick of the stock master cylinder. I'm wondering about getiing a nice low profile Brembo assembly (handlebar mounted) and swapping. Anyone have personal experience or any tips on sizing? Thanks!

What the Phuk????

Where do I begin? Might as well pull up a chair.....

First let me state that in no way do I blame Steve Johns for TRYING to sell me a bike. I finally decided in June to purchase the F800S from Bogarts (Birmingham, AL). That was when I heard that BMW was factory-lowering the bikes (for only $175), as opposed to spending another $1000 for an aftermarket shock. I gave a deposit and watched as Steven entered the order into the system. I was told that I should be looking for my new bike in the fall.

In July, Steve checks on my order to see if it was in cue, and doesn't see it. He contacts the BMWNA Rep to see what the deal was and was told that they weren't going to lower the bikes until January. He (the Rep) had very little concern for my situation. Told Steve to tell me to just buy the shock. Very disappointing. BTW - No Notice of the schedule change.

So I wait patiently for my bike, thinking it'll be here this spring. I got a call from Steve today telling me that when he went to check on my bike, the order was gone. When he checked on it, he was told that they were not going to make the F800S anymore and that my order was canceled. BTW.... No Notice that my order was canceled.

I contacted the Customer Relations people at BMW, told them what you just read here. After being placed on hold for a moment, he comes back and tells me that they were still making the F800S.

WHAT THE PHUK?????

I'm livid... well, I was livid at 10am when I first got the call. Stay tuned, there may be more.....

The Deadly Dozen: 12 Motorcycle Safety Myths and Misconceptions

http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/streetsurvival/dangerous_motorcycle_safety_myths/index.html

When science meets urban legend and imperfect logic, some of the "facts" motorcyclists think they "know" about motorcycle safety, crashes, and riding turn out to be dangerous myths and misconceptions. From the February 2006 issue of Motorcycle Cruiser magazine. By Art Friedman.

Get a group of motorcyclists talking about crashes and safety, and you will almost certainly hear some of them—popular misconceptions, incorrect assumptions, urban legends, and intuitive explanations about motorcycle safety that turn out to be wrong when you actually check out the facts. The problem is that believing these misconceptions can increase your chances of being involved in an accident or getting hurt when you do crash.

Maybe you know BS when you hear it, but maybe you have heard some myths repeated so often or by people whose expertise you respect that you think they are actually true. Unfortunately, there are a lot of motorcyclists who do believe them. We thought that some of these fallacies should be brought out into the light of day so that riders have the right information upon which to make informed riding-safety decisions. We also hope it will keep more motorcyclists from repeating such misconceptions to riders who turn to them for advice.

These are the Deadly Dozen, the motorcycle safety myths and urban legends ones that we hear most frequently.

Myth 1: Other Drivers Don't Care About Motorcyclists

It may seem hard to believe at times, but other drivers almost never actually want to hit you. Most of those near-misses come about because they don't always know you are there, even when you are right in front of them, seemingly in plain view. You can be obscured or completely hidden by glare, by other things on or along the road, by the cars roof pillars, the handicap hangtag, or by other traffic. Of course, not all drivers "think motorcycles" and make the effort to look that extra bit harder to see if there might be a motorcyclist hidden by that obscuration or in their blind spot.

Instead of assuming that they will ignore you even when they see you, you should help make it easier for drivers to spot you, especially as the population ages and more drivers have greater difficulty in picking you out. To overcome the fact that you might be hard to see and harder to notice, wear bright colors, especially on your helmet and jacket. Run your high beam during the day. Think about things that can hide you and your bike from other drivers, things that can be as common as the sun behind you, the car ahead in the next lane, or a couple of roadside poles that line up on the driver's line of sight toward you. Make an effort to ride in or move to a location where drivers with potentially conflicting courses can see you before they stray your way.

Myth 2: Loud Pipes Save Lives

Yeah, there are a few situations—like where you are right next to a driver with his window down who is about the to change lanes—where full-time noise-makers might help a driver notice you, but all that noise directed rearward doesn't do much in the most common and much more dangerous conflict where a car turns in front of you. Maybe it's the fatigue caused by the noise, maybe it's the attitudes of riders who insist on making annoying noise, or perhaps loud bikes annoy enough drivers to make them aggressive. Whatever the reason, the research shows that bikes with modified exhaust systems crash more frequently than those with stock pipes. If you really want to save lives, turn to a loud jacket or a bright helmet color, which have been proven to do the job. Or install a louder horn. Otherwise, just shut up.

Myth 3: Motorcycle Helmets Break Necks

It seems logical—you put more weight out there on the end of your neck and when you get thrown off the bike, that extra weight will create more pendulum force on your neck. Turns out, it doesn't work that way. In fact, the energy-absorbing qualities of a DOT motorcycle helmet also absorb the energy that breaks riders' necks in impacts. Studies show that helmeted motorcyclists actually suffer fewer neck injuries when they crash compared to riders who crash without helmets.

Myth 4: Helmets Block Your Ability to See or Hear Danger

The thing you learn when you dig into the research is that motorcycle riders who use helmets crash less frequently than those who don't. Maybe that happens because motorcyclists who decide to wear helmets have a better or more realistic attitude about riding. Maybe it's because putting on a helmet is a reminder that what you are about to do can be dangerous and the act of accepting protection puts you in the right mindset. Maybe it's because a helmet provides eye protection and cuts down wind noise so you can actually see and hear better. Maybe its because, by cutting wind pressure and noise, a helmet reduces fatigue. Whatever the reasons, wearing a helmet clearly does not increase a motorcyclist's risk of having an accident and wearing one correlates to reduced likelihood of an accident.

Myth 5: A Helmet Won't Help in Most Crashes

People look at the seemingly low impact speeds used in motorcycle-helmet testing and assume that if you are going faster than that, the helmet will no longer be up to the job. That ignores a few critical facts:

Most accidents happen at relatively low speeds.
Most of the impact energy is usually vertical—the distance your head falls until it hits.
Helmets (or at least helmets that meet DOT standards) perform spectacular life-saving feats at impact speeds far above those used in testing.
When a helmeted rider suffers a fatal head injury, it frequently doesn't matter, because, to hit hard enough to sustain that fatal injury, he sustained multiple additional fatal injuries to other parts of his body. In other words, the fact that the helmet didn't prevent the head injury was of no consequence.
The numbers clearly say that riders using DOT helmets simply survive crashes more successfully than those without them.

Myth 6: A Helmet Will Leave You Brain Damaged in an Crash When You Would Have Simply Died

Of course that's possible—your helmet attenuates the impact energy enough to keep the injury from being fatal but not enough to keep all of your eggs from getting scrambled. However, that's rare, and if you hit that hard, you are likely to get killed by some other injury. It's actually the un-helmeted rider who is likely to cross from animal to vegetable kingdom, and often from a relatively minor impact that would have damaged nothing but his ego if he'd been wearing a DOT helmet.

Myth 7: A Skilled Rider Should Be Able to Handle Almost Any Situation

The sharpest, most skilled motorcyclist in the world isn't going to be up to the task when a car turns or pulls out in front of him a short distance ahead and stops directly in his path broadside. Believing that your superior skills will keep you of trouble is a pipe dream, even if they are as good as you think. No matter how skilled you are, it's better to ride to avoid situations that can turn ugly. Slow down, scan farther ahead, and think strategically. And dress for the crash.

Myth 8: If You Are Going to Crash, Lay It Down

I suspect this line was developed by riders to explain why they ended up flat-side-down while trying to avoid a crash. They over-braked or otherwise lost control, then tried to explain the crash away as intentional and tried to make it sound like it wasn't a crash at all. Maybe motorcycle brakes once were so bad that you could stop better off your bike while sliding or tumbling. If so, that hasn't been true for decades. You can scrub off much more speed before and there be going slower at impact with effective braking than you will sliding down the road on your butt. And if you are still on the bike, you might get thrown over the car you collide with, avoiding an impact with your body. If you slide into a car while you are on the ground, you either have a hard stop against it or end up wedged under it. Remember that the phrase "I laid 'er down to avoid a crash" is an oxymoron, often repeated by some other kind of moron.

The only events where being on the ground might leave you better off are: 1) on an elevated roadway where going over the guardrail will cause you to fall a long way, or 2) in that situation you see occasionally in movies, where the motorcyclist slides under a semi trailer without touching it. That's a good trick if the truck is moving.

Myth 9: One Beer Won't Hurt

Maybe not while you are drinking it, but if you get on your motorcycle after that, the effects of a single beer can get you hurt for life. No matter how unaffected you are sure you are, all the studies say differently. You increase your risk to yourself and to others when you drink and hit the road. Also, as you age, your metabolism slows down, and those "coupla drinks" you had last night may still be affecting you when you hit the road the next morning.

Myth 10: It's Better to Stay in Your Lane than Split Lanes

In most parts of the world, motorcycles split lanes all the time, everywhere traffic is heavy. Here in the U.S., people often act as if lane-splitting is insane. But when someone actually studied it in the only place in the U.S. where it's legal (California), they discovered it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, slow-moving traffic. Still many motorcyclists berate others who do it, when they should in fact be endorsing it.

Myth 11: I'm Safer on the Street than on an Interstate

The thinking here must be that slower is safer, but that's only really true after the accident begins. Controlled-access roadways are inherently safer because all the traffic is going the same way, and there are no side streets from which someone can pop into your path, no pedestrians, and, often, less roadside "furniture" to hit if you depart the roadway. Running down the road at 70 mph side-by-sidewall with the whirling wheels of a semi may feel hairy, but you are actually safer than at half that speed on a city street or even a country road.

Myth 12: A Skilled Rider Can Stop Better with Conventional Brakes than with Anti-Lock Brakes

Extensive testing done recently disproves this popular notion. Even on clean, dry, flat pavement, skilled, experienced riders (who did hundreds of panic stops for the testing on outrigger-equipped motorcycles) stopped in less distance with anti-lock brakes (ABS) than with conventional or linked braking systems. Though the tests didn't include samples on surfaces with slick, dirty or wet spots, ABS certainly would have performed even better under those conditions while eliminating much of the risk of crashing.

The other cool thing about ABS on a motorcycle is that allows you to safely practice panic stops without risking a crash caused by lock-up.

Anyway, the next time tells you that he had to "lay it down" or that green bikes crash more than purple ones, you can nod and snicker internally or challenge them. Just don't base your own riding choices on what other people assume unless their is some solid science to back it up.

Replacement Horn for BWM R1200 GS

I'm hoping that someone else has done this and can give me some ideas.

The stock horn doesn't cut is at all. No one can hear it when I honk when they are coming into my lane.
Since my bike it so quite I need a good horn.

Has anyone replaced their horn with a real loud one?

Cheers

Press Release: BMW Motorrad acquires Husqvarna Motorcycles.

BMW will acquire the renowned motorcycle company Husqvarna Motorcycles. Dr. Herbert Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, and the Italian industrialist Claudio Castiglioni signed a contract on 19.07.2007 in Italy. The contractual agreement will come into full effect upon final approval of the EU cartel authorities. Both parties agreed that the purchase price was to remain confidential.

For BMW Motorrad the acquisition of Husqvarna Motorcycles is a logical step in enhancing the company's activities in the field of light, sporty motorcycles, which has recently been reinforced with the new models of the BMW G 650 X series. Commenting on BMW's decision to acquire Husqvarna Motorcycles, Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, stated: "With the Husqvarna models targeted at the sporty competition, we will be able to extend the BMW Motorrad range to include younger groups of customers as well as the entire off-road and supermoto sector much more quickly and effectively than with our core brand alone. This transaction also provides us with direct access to a worldwide sales network in the off-road segment."

BMW Motorrad plans to continue operating Husqvarna Motorcycles as a separate enterprise. All development, sales and production activities, as well as the current workforce, will remain in place at its present location in the region of Varese in northern Italy.

Just as BMW Motorrad, Husqvarna Motorcycles is steeped in tradition and one of the most renowned motorcycle companies in the world. Motorcycles were initially produced in Sweden from 1903 and in Italy from 1986. Today the company is one of the leading suppliers of sporty off-road motorcycles. In the course of its history, Husqvarna Motorcycles has achieved numerous international racing victories including European and World Championship titles.

Has any ridden the new 800cc twin? I read an article in CycleWorld (I think). It got good reviews, but some real world commentary would be nice. I haven't seen one in any of the dealerships here out west. I believe it is an "F" model, but not real sure.

So, I just bought my first BMW, and it's not in amazing shape. But I'm super excited about it.

I live in the Denver area and was wondering if there were any places around the city that have parts for, or are just informative about these bikes? I have several parts to buy for it, most are aesthetic issues, like a new seat, some custom handlebars etc.. perhaps some new chrome parts as well.

So, if there are any great resources in Denver, please let me know. Thanks.

I'm mainly looking at these three bikes right now. This article gives some interesting info on the tradeoffs:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/roadtests/122_0509_naked_bike_comparison/index.html

Of course, the Fz1 was redone last year and had its fuel injection fixed this year.

This is a tough choice...

but, in colorado that often means the wind blows you all over your lane
i went to town to meet a friend for coffee
then went to a coffee house to read
and another friend walks in so i did not get much reading done
the ride home was uneventfull

soon i should get a good canyon ride in
once i a new back tire that wont be
so slippery
my commuting miles has squared off and worn down
that wheel

but someone must have a REAL ride report?

So I was eager to get home a couple nights ago and I wasn't thinking "cold weather riding" I let the bike warm up and all but I didn't let my tires warm up. The road was a little slick and I dumped it. It wasn't bad though, hurt my toe, riped my jeans and only one of my co-workers saw it. Got a little flat spot on one of my cases though.
Remember winter riders to think about the ride you are about to take it will help keep the tires on the road and you off it.

3rd it had a 2 gallon tank why bother I drove 36 miles and used 1.75 gallons.
Deal's Gap Warning (Genuine)

This post was pulled off the Forum Board of the Georgia BMW Club. Just passing it along.

This was posted by Darryl Cannon A.K.A. Killboy on the Deals Gap Yahoo discussion board, and also by TNHP officer Cagle on his myspace page. Always a little skeptical when I see posts that begin with "A trooper said...." but he was googled and he's the real McCoy. Another interesting thing that I found on a Deal's Gap news site is that the troopers are riding BMW 1150RT/Ps....
~~~~~~~
"EVERYONE WHO GOES TO DEALS GAP------PLEASE READ THIS-----I'M TRYING TO
HELP YOU ALL OUT"...posted by a State Trooper:
"Hey, just to give you a heads up for next season----we have a new captain in the knoxville district which covers blount county------ he has already told us that we will put a stop to the "race track driving" up on the dragon this year------so far what they have said is that the speed limit is 30mph and "ANYONE" caught going 50mph and up will be charged with reckless driving and will be jailed and their bike/car will be impounded--- --I am telling you
this because i am trying to put the word out to everyone i know----or to people who know people that go up there-----I don't want to have to take people to jail for this---however I have bills to pay and I kind of like having a job---so never the less I have to do what i am told to do-----so the way i see it is that if killboy.com knows and you know and dealsgap.com knows and whoever else can find out can pass this along---it will benefit everybody--- -----feel free to copy and pass this to let everyone know-------if you get caught up there it is only your fault because i am trying to pass the word along for everybody's sake-----we are
not just going to come up from the bottom like in years past---they are gonna have us go through cherohala skwy in north carolina and come from the top down to the bottom----so no more free rides on your way back to the state line----they are gonna bring unmarked cars with radio's and have unmarked bikes up there----this will be a joint effort with blount county and the THP-----The entire THP motor unit will be brought in 2 people at a time(for a week long assignment) to be paired up with the local car----they plan on busting tail at least 3-4 times right off the bat---then they will sit back and see what takes place-----these orders came from Nashville Headquarters- --we have a complete brand new higher ranking structure from the very tip top spot down----they have said we will work until the problem is solved----just wanted to give you and your friends a heads up.......... SIGNED...
.......Trp Cagle with THP assigned to Blount County Division---- (don't come crying to me if you get busted----cause I'm telling you now)"
As a side note, for those who haven't ridden the Dragon (www.tailofthedragon.com) use more caution on the Dragon and Deal's Gap, because of the faster bikes, (i.e. crotch rockets) and the unexpected trucks that use that Intrastate highway 129.. A good time to ride the Dragon is on Monday and Tuesday around 7 to 11 AM... the earlier the better.... Ride safe, hey average 30 MPH on that 11 miles...and you done something!!!
My wife and I currently ride heavier cruiser (Valkyrie and V-star 1100) and are considering a pair of BMW650GS bikes to travel on. We like the idea of having some dirt road capability. Does anyone have experience on these bikes? She is very vertically challenged at 5 foot even and they offer a factory lowered version. Interested in how far you travel per day and capacity.
Ed Bargy has updated the TGP and looking forward to a
new era of racing at TGP. Check out the video tour of
the new track.
www.tgprace.com/lapcw.htm
Talladega Gran Prix Raceway is a 1.33 mile road course
[don't know if this is old distance or new]located
just minutes from Interstate 20. The track, built in
1985 has been host to numerous motorcycle races,
go-kart races, sport car races, and various clubs
events. The track is also being used as a test course
by a major motorcycle manufacturer. The track is
available for tuning and testing of motorcycles, cars,
and go-karts.
Notes: some of the "double yellow" areas were simply not justified (i.e. one could pass safely) and many of the curve sign speeds were very unrealistic as they are in many states. There is always that 10% that act like "Squids" and do stupid things.
Tees for Troops
This came from our AL BMW Club prez and I thought this was worth passing along. I have quite a few tees that I've retired, waiting to give to someone who would appreciate rather some salvation army recipient that wouldn't.
~~~~~~~~~
Tee’s for our Troops

Some of our wounded troops are flown to Landstuhl Army Medical Hospital, Germany and then to our state-side military hospitals with not much more than a hospital gown to wear. I have partnered with Columbia Baptist Association, Dothan, AL and Operation First Response www.operationfirstresponse.ocm ) to provide them with a BIKER t-shirt and a card or note for them to say thanks and we love you and will be praying for you. Columbia Baptist will be helping with the collection and shipping to Operation First Response then they will distribute them where needed. Please visit their website.

The best way to contribute is to gather what shirts you wish to donate and box them up and deliver or send them to:

Tee’s for our Troops
Columbia Baptist Association
1308 Ross Clark Circle
Dothan, AL 36301

We ask that you help us by sending only new or like new shirts; place them in a gallon, zip-lock type bag, put a card or personal note inside and mark the size on the outside with a permanent marker. On the card or note you are welcome to put correspondence information and info about you and your club and maybe a photo of you and your ride. Donations to help offset shipping would be greatly appreciated. (Maybe $1 or $2 per shirt). Also, if you have a current Biker Mag you can include it. (Please limit to one because of the cost of shipping)

This effort was born in a conversation with a person with the USO. We are just sharing the vision and the blessing.

Things NOT to ask your BMW shop

I was in today ordering a couple small parts for my '85 K100 and decided to take the opportunity for a little biker to biker therapy. I'm still new at riding after a 25 year absence so my question had to do with riding in severely gusting winds as we had here Saturday. I realize that sort of weather is always going to suck for riding but it seemed like I had a particularly bad time of it compared to my riding partners who were primarily on low slung cruisers. So my question was whether it was rediculous to put a 300+ pound monkey such as myself on a relatively light, tall and top heavy bike like the K100? My shop's response was to go into different styles of riding, how much better my bike cornered, etc. Yeah, I know all that, but I was seriously scared at how I was pushed all around by the wind. Seems to me if I sat lower on a heavier bike to begin with, things might have gone at least somewhat better.... yes? no?

*I should add that I ride naked... that is to say without a faring which I'm sure doesn't help with the whole wind thing as well.

I've got a 72 R60 /5 ... the original seat is uncomfortable after about 45 minutes of riding. It appears to be in good condition.

Does anyone know if these seats have a reputation for being uncomfortable?

I found a Corbin "gunfighter" seat on the net for $299 ... looks cool but doesnt seem to have much padding

Has anyone tried one of these seats?

Will having my seat "redone" make it more comfortable?

Thanks!

For those of you in the area, you might want to stop by Motohaus Coffee in general and tonight in specific for Adventure Riders Night: http://www.motohauscoffee.com/events.html. This coffeeshop looks to be a real hangout for bikers of all brands but particularly BMW's because of the owner's (Max) interest in them. Also check out the vintage bike nights which is where I'm more likely to be found. :)

Tribute to my teacher

Gaspar Trama, motorcycle instructor par exellance, and one of the finest humans I have ever had privilege to know, passed away Tues, July 11, 2006. He went into the hospital for abdominal pain last satuday, they found colon cancer, operated successfully, and he died later of a heart attack. (The leading cause of death for bikers.)
Twenty years ago he taught me how to ride a motorcycle. Every single time I come home as alive and well as I left, I thank him. There's no question that without him, I would not be the woman I am today. My heart is crushed that he will not teach my daughter how to ride.
He was a highly intelligent man, patient, thoughtful, respectful, dignified and generous. I was truly blessed to have been his student, and throughout my career in the motorcycle industry, always thought of him as a mentor and dear friend.
We've lost a great one.

I was thinking about riding from San Francisco to Portland in one day. I imagine it will take me a good 10-12 hours. I've never done this before. Any thoughts or advice?
